If I take a look at next week’s weather forecast, it’s clear that the weather will not be lenient with the attendants of the ExtremeMan competition. The 33° Celsius temperature is definitely a challenge that should not be taken lightly. It seems the extreme heat will be permanently linked to the image of the ExtremeMan competition.
In the last week of the preparation you have to think about the risk factors, too. Not building the race within yourself equals a risk factor of preparing for a business presentation for six months and holding it with an almost dry laptop battery. You have a chance of talking your way out but it’s not likely.
Successfully completing an ironman competition depends on two things:
 
Choosing the right pace and having the right nutrition, refreshment.
Experts say that you can reach optimal performance at 65-70% of your maximum pulse in such a long run. So if you feel that you didn’t do everything you planned it’s too late to agonize on it now. Adjust the planned intensity to your present fitness and accept the situation- this is also a part of an ironman race. If you raise the intensity permanently, it’s likely that you are going to pay for it on the track, ending up in a fight to preserve your dignity.

Nutrition, freshening.
What is freshening exactly? A pleasant summer shower or an ice cold spritzer? Maybe on an average Saturday amid an afternoon nap in the garden but now you are about to face the big race of your life: you can complete the ironman distance, just don’t mess it up! Refreshing during an ironman race is a question of life and death. It means the right amount of carbohydrate, water and salt intake and cooling. Wouldn’t be your first thought, though, would it?
While racing, your body is like a furnace running low. Only 25% of the muscle work is utilized, the remaining 75% appears as heat which you have to manage. You also have to take care of cooling and an adequate amount of liquid, carbohydrate and salt intake. The key word is adequate, but what exactly is adequate?
